Djokovic Wins 23rd Grand Slam Single

June 12, 2023

On Sunday, Djokovic broke his 22-year tie with Nadal by defeating Casper Ruud 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 to win his 23rd grand slam title.

Since breaking into the top tier of professional tennis 18 years ago, Novak Djokovic has used the dizzying bar set by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal before him as inspiration to push himself to his limits, never doubting that he would one day rise above it.

Djokovic now holds numerous records, including the men's grand slam record, thanks to this historic victory. Djokovic is the first person to win each grand slam tournament three times and has now won three titles in Paris after years of being blocked by Nadal, the greatest claycourter of all time, at the French Open. In addition, he will stay at No. 1 for a record-extending 388th consecutive week as the greatest player in the world.

At 36 years and 20 days old, Djokovic is now the oldest singles champion at Roland Garros in record-keeping. In addition, he has a 21-match grand slam winning streak after winning the last three grand slam events he has played in. He missed the US Open in 2017 because the country forbade unvaccinated visitors from entering.
