The Dominican Republic has acknowledged Morocco's sovereignty over the Western Sahara, according to the foreign ministry in Rabat, as a slowly expanding number of countries do as well.
Western Sahara is regarded by Morocco as its own territory, but the Polisario Front, which is backed by Algeria, wants to create an independent state there. Morocco's relationships with some of its neighbours have soured as a result of the dispute, most notably Algeria.
According to a statement from Morocco's foreign ministry, the Dominican Republic's position was laid out in a letter by Roberto Lvarez, the country's foreign minister.
According to the Dominican Republic's position, the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, which established a consulate in Western Sahara last year, shares the same views.
Winning support for its rule over Western Sahara has been the ultimate goal of Moroccan diplomacy.
Some 28 other states, mostly Arab and African, have opened consulates in the territory as tangible proof of their support for Rabat.
Following a similar move by the United States in 2020, Morocco was successful in getting Israel to recognise its claim to sovereignty over the area earlier this month. Algeria has harshly rebuked Israel's action.
