England Celebrates First Victory in New Zealand Since 2008

England won the first Test of the two-test series by 267 runs over New Zealand. at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui.

Chasing a target of 394 to win, the hosts were bowled out for 126. Only Daryl Mitchell, 57 not out, and Blair Tickner offered any resistance on the day. Both Stuart Broad and James Anderson took 4 wickets, with Anderson hunting 4 of the last 5 wickets.

With the help of Ben Duckett's 84 from 68 and Harry Brook's 89 from 81, England scored 325/9 in 58.2 overs. Neil Wagner took four wickets for 82.

Launching the first innings, the hosts scored 306, with the help of Devon Conway's 77 and Tom Blundell's 138.

In return, England scored 374 in the second inning, with Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Ben Foakes scoring half centuries, setting a target of 394 for the hosts.

This was also England’s first victory in New Zealand since 2008 - the tour that saw Anderson and Broad first united - and a 10th in 11 matches since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took charge at the start of last summer. They now take a 1-0 lead into next week’s second and final Test in Wellington.
