Jordan Stolz Became the World Youngest Speed Skating Champion

March 5, 2023

At the World Single Distance Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands, on Friday, Jordan Stolz, 18, won gold in the men's 500-metre event to become the world youngest speed skating champion.

Jordan finished in 34.10 seconds, winning by 0.36 seconds over the reigning champion Laurent Dubreuil of Canada and by 0.02 seconds over Olympic bronze medalist Wataru Morishige of Japan.

The previous youngest gold medalist was a Dutchwoman named Femke Kok, who won the team sprint competition at the age of 19 in 2020. Czech Martina Sablikova, who was 19 when she won her first gold, became the youngest world champion in an individual competition.

Jordan won the junior world championships in Inzell, Germany, last month and made history by becoming the youngest man to ever claim an individual World Cup victory.

He won the 500m, 1,000m, and 1,500m races three times in a row and took home bronze in the 5,000m and mass start, the other two individual competitions. In the men's team sprint, he also took home the gold.

Together with fellow Wisconsin natives Eric Heiden and Beth Heiden, Jordan became just the third speed skater to win both the junior and senior single distance world titles in the same season.
