Microsoft to Invest More in OpenAI as Tech Race Heats Up

February 1, 2023

Microsoft Corporation has announced an additional multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI.

Microsoft, which recently touted a revolution in artificial intelligence (AI), is expanding on a bet it made on OpenAI nearly four years ago, when it committed $1 billion to the startup co-founded by Elon Musk and investor Sam Altman.

Since then, it has built a supercomputer to power OpenAI's technology, among other forms of assistance.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, which generates prose or poetry on command, is a prime example that received widespread attention in Silicon Valley last year.

Microsoft announced last week that it intends to incorporate such AI into all of its products, while OpenAI continues to pursue the creation of human-like intelligence for machines.

Microsoft has begun incorporating OpenAI technology into its search engine Bing, which is being discussed as a potential competitor to Google for the first time in years.

Microsoft's wager comes just days after Alphabet and Microsoft both announced layoffs of 10,000 or more employees.
