North Korea Blows Inter Korean Road Near the Border

October 15, 2024

South Korea's military fired warning shots Tuesday after North Korea detonated parts of inter-Korean roadways and rail lines on its side of the tightly guarded border between the two Koreas.

As part of its campaign for a "two-state" system, Pyongyang announced last week that it will completely block off the inter-Korean highways and trains and further strengthen the territory on its side of the border, abandoning its long-standing aim of unification.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the South, certain northern sections of rail and road networks that were connected to the South were destroyed at around noon on Tuesday. As a blatant breach of previous inter-Korean agreements, Seoul's unification ministry, which deals with cross-border issues, denounced the occurrence as "highly abnormal."

After the North accused Seoul of launching drones over Pyongyang last week, tensions increased. According to North Korea, a "huge number" of anti-North leaflets were dispersed by the drones.

Whether the purported drones were flown by South Korean military personnel or civilians has not been confirmed by the South Korean authorities.

Since May, North Korean balloons carrying trash have also caused tensions between the two Koreas. The launches are a reaction to balloons sent by anti-regime demonstrators in the South, according to Pyongyang.
